How Blogging Helps Students Survive & Thrive

You want to know how blogging helps students? Maybe you are a student thinking about blogging? Or maybe you’re questioning if you should continue running your current blog? Well, I’m a college student and a blogger here to tell you about all the things blogging can do for your life.

I started my blog over summer as a junior in college. I had read blogs in various niches for a long time and often dreamed about running my own successful blog. Then one day, I realized I was ready to start.

How Blogging Helps Students Excel at Life & School

Blogging life came with its ups and downs, and I’m still only in the beginning phase! But even so, I’ve been able to see several ways how blogging helps students (like me!) survive and thrive during academic life. (Note: I’m assuming you’re a college student, but most of these benefits apply for younger students, too.)

Blogging Is a Flexible Side Hustle

Holding a job during college can be hard. Scheduling shifts around class times, making time to study after work—it’s not easy for all students.

But you need a little money for post-graduation savings. Blogging is the perfect super-flexible side gig.

Blogging has no set hours. You can work on your blog whenever and for as long as you want. This means no more schedule conflicts!

You just need to set up your blog (which isn’t too hard). Then, you set aside an hour a week to create a blog post of 500-1000 words. Promote your posts on social media and watch readers stream in. Easy-peasy!

I managed to maintain my blog while attending university as a full-time student and still holding down a part-time job. So I promise, it is manageable.

Then if you monetize your blog with ads or affiliate links, you’ve got a simple source of extra money! You can make a little bit of money with your blog during college by:

  • Selling ebooks
  • Hosting ads
  • Joining affiliate programs
  • Writing sponsored posts

It’s often not much at first, just a few extra dollars here and there. But if you build up your readership, you’ll see more and more.

If driving for Uber or walking dogs doesn’t work for you, maybe blogging will. You can do it instead of a part-time job, or do both! Whatever fits your life.

Blogging Can Boost Your Career

What is your career goal? How are you going to get there? There’s a good chance blogging can help.

There are blogs in nearly every niche you can imagine, and that includes your dream profession.

Often, a blog can act as a great portfolio and demonstration of your expertise! Thinking of going into web design or development? A good-looking blog can act as proof of your skills.

Thinking of going into journalism or writing? Well-written, topical blog posts will show off your writing chops.

Want to be a teacher? A blog full of strong lesson plans or relevant essays will show prospective schools how serious you are.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. A blog can show off your knowledge in nearly any field—history, marketing, science, engineering, management—you can think of. It’s a perfect resume-booster.

Plus, blogging is social. You can connect with other bloggers in your field—AKA people working in your industry.

Running your own blog can help you make career connections. It’s one more tool for networking like a boss!

Blogging Is a Great Outlet to Express Yourself

To me, blogging is a passion. A hobby. A creative outlet. Blogging is the perfect way to write your thoughts and feelings out.

Blogging can be your live, online journal. It can be your passion project, the place you pour all your creative energies. It can be your social circle and the community to talk about things you love.

If you need a space and some willing listeners to talk about the things you care about most, a blog can be that. Your blog can be the home to all your interests.

If you want a place to talk about all the things that happen to you and to process your thoughts, you can create a blog for that. Your blog can fit all the stories and memories of your life.

If you enjoy writing, finding or taking pictures, and putting together blog posts, then a blog is the perfect way for you to unwind. A blog is something you can design to fit you.

Again, blogging can help you connect with others like you. You can find plenty of friends, community resources, and like-minded people through your blogging efforts.

If you have feelings, stories, or creative energies you don’t know where to store, try creating a blog that can. Your blog could become a home to all the memories and projects of your time in college, which is a lovely thought.

Blogging Improves Your Writing Skills

This last benefit is super practical. College involves writing approximately 1,345,638,835 pages of material (Kidder 12). You’re going to need strong writing skills to ace your classes.

Practice makes perfect, and blogging can give you that practice. Plus, writing about topics you love (like skincare, travel, exercise, etc.) is way easier and more fun than practicing writing about boring topics.

But blog posts are so, so different from academic essays? Yes, that’s true. But most of the core ideas are the same.

Writing good academic essays is like jumping through a bunch of linguistic hoops. Don’t use passive voice, don’t use second or first person, always cite your sources, etc.

Writing a good blog post is just jumping through a slightly different set of hoops. Always sound friendly and address the reader, don’t use technical jargon when you can avoid it, always link to where you got your information from, and so on.

Essays and blog posts have different goals, but the same ways of getting there. You have to learn to adapt your writing to the expectations set by your readers, whether they’re fellow makeup lovers or your professor.

Ultimately, blogging makes some perfect opportunities to practice your writing and boost your skills. Your paper grades will thank you!
